After spending yesterday up close to the Hubbard Glacier, today we spent about six hours sailing through Glacier Bay National Park checking out multiple glaciers. At about 11am we were entering into the scenic part of the day and we enjoyed spending time on the veranda - that's just a must when taking an Alaska cruise! Saw multiple mountains - SO BIG, and covered in snow! - and you could see waterfalls or at least a snow trail coming down. Also spotted several "hanging glaciers" up in the mountains, really cool.
As we approached mid-day we passed smaller glaciers and Kim got us amaretto milkshakes which we decided made a good lunch. It was such a sunny, gorgeous day as we sailed past smaller glaciers, and by the time we reached Margerie Glacier the temperature had warmed from the low 50's to the mid-60's. The HAL ship that passed us, I'd seen it in and among the ice fields so I knew we'd get close to Margerie Glacier - closer than we were three years ago.
Panoramic view of the Margerie Glacier - note how far it goes up into the mountains!
Tomorrow we will be in Skagway and for the first time on this trip we have an off-the-ship excursion. Interestingly, they've had rockslides in Skagway so we will be docked in the harbor and it will take a 45 minute tender ride to get to shore.
